What Training Does a Dental Hygienist Require?
To get admission for a training program you should have a high school diploma and produce some entrance test scores from a college. Though some programs offer a certificate, bachelors or master’s degree, it is necessary to get an associate degree or certificate in dental hygiene if you wish to practice in a private dental clinic.
The dental hygienist program can take minimum 2 years to complete. Instruction is offered in laboratory, clinical and classroom duties. You have to pass several tests including the national board examination. A license is required to work in the state that you practice.
How Long Does it Take to Become a Dental Hygienist?
Once you have completed the course and become a dental assistant, you need to complete another 2 to 3 years in a dental hygiene school and pass various national, regional and state exams to be able to apply for licensure.
You will also have to maintain clinic schedules 2-3 times a week and practice on live patients. Knowledge of writing, algebra, pre-calculus, public speaking, nutrition is necessary. Apart from this, the other subjects covered are chemistry, anatomy, physiology, microbiology and other social sciences.
